WATNALL WI TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT TO MEMBERS 2017/18
Our programme of speakers this year covered such topics as Yoga, the History of Boots No 7, Wine Tasting (always popular), Tree Huggery (a local Artist who creates art work from recycled materials), and a talk given by a representative of Dementia Friends Alzheimer’s Society. Additional regular activities include a Lunch Club, Craft Group.
The money we raised in the previous year, to commemorate past members, was used to purchase an ornamental Pear Tree which has been planted close to our hall by the main road.
We also celebrated our 90th Birthday with an excellent afternoon tea where we were joined by the Leader of Greasley Parish Council, our County Chairman Jane Jefferson, Vice Chairman Pam Stoddart, WI Advisor Linda Davey and representatives from Leenside, Kimberley and Nuthall and District WIs, as well as past Watnall WI Presidents.
Our members took part in a visit to a local garden, met up for coffee at a local café, visited Renishaw Hall on a day out, and enjoyed an evening at Crabtree & Evelyn. They enjoyed watching the film Suffragette together and this was followed by a Suffragette themed tea where we were treated to an excellent reading of extracts from first-hand accounts of some of the Suffrage meetings and also an account of Forced Feeding.
Members also took part in many activities arranged by the County Federation, including submitting an exhibit at the Newark County Show using only recycled materials, a Burns Night Lunch, the Federation Centenary Celebration at Newark Parish Church and the Annual Meeting held at the Royal Centre, Nottingham. As always the County Quiz was popular and we were represented by four teams.
Members were provided with wild flower seeds and instructions on how to create a green heart shape from green papier-mâché and incorporate the seeds which could then be distributed in the community as part of the Show the Love Campaign.
We ran a tombola stall for the second year running at the local ‘Picnic in the Park’.
Two of our members won second and third place in the Bramley Apple Competition at Apple Day in Southwell.
We are again going to Tissington Hall to round off our year of activities. The theme at Tissington this year is Neverland.
During the year hall hiring has continued at near capacity level. We have made further improvements to the structure of the building by adding a small extension to the Rolleston Room which incorporated a piece of outside space that was not accessible normally. We have also upgraded two of the toilets and created a pleasant hand washing area in the adjoining corridor.
