WATNALL WI TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT TO MEMBERS 2016/17
We have had a varied programme this year spanning from talks about diabetes and the work of the Eastwood Volunteer Bureau to the importance of Mindfulness. We were entertained with a quiz about the Highway Code and legislation concerned with driving offences, the history of the Lost Houses of Nottinghamshire and the Masters of Mirth. In the summer we visited Felley Priory Gardens on a glorious afternoon followed in August by an evening of Pimms, Prose and Poems, with the members suppling the entertainment. We then rounded off the year with a flower demonstration in time to give members ideas for Christmas.
At our December meeting instead of Christmas Cards members donated to the City Hospital Oncology Unit in memory of long standing member Valerie Wykes. We collected food items in January to be sent to Emanual House, which provides hot meals to the homeless and people in need.
We have raised funds to purchase a tree to be planted locally to celebrate 90 years of Watnall WI and in memory of all past members particularly Valerie Wykes and Anne Hale who both died recently. This is an ongoing project and we are hoping the tree will be planted in the coming year.
Members were involved in knitting “Twiddle Muffs” and these were donated to the Dementia Ward at Highbury Vale Hospital and making ‘Lonely Bouquets’ which were distributed to members of the public through Kimberley Library and the RVS.
We participated in the Notts Federation’s Centenary Fun Day in July when two members ran a ‘Guess the number of Fleas on the Dog’ stall. Several members ran a tombola at the local ‘Picnic in the Park’ in June. This was a wonderful community event in aid of the local football and cricket clubs, with the proceeds from our tombola going to WI funds.
Several members attended the Annual Council Meeting in April where two of our members, Margaret McMurdo and Pam Bradly were honoured as Inspiring Women.
We enjoyed a Scrabble evening in March and a Board Games evening in November.
Four of our members are in the choir for the annual ‘Celebration of Christmas’ at St. Peters Church in Nottingham organised by Notts Federation.
Janet Barker has been working very hard this year and has submitted a Resolution to the Notts Federation on raising awareness of Autism. This resolution has passed the first hurdle and been forwarded to National for consideration.
Our members also took part in many of the activities arranged by the Notts Federation, these included a Centenary Dinner at Portland College, a Literary Lunch where the speaker was Cathy Bramley, three teams in the County Quiz, and we were also represented at the Autumn Council Meeting where the entertainment was an Abba tribute group.
To close the year of activities we are going to Tissington Hall to see the themed Beauty and the Beast Decorations in November.
